CRONOLOGIA
[modifica | modifica sorgente]1930 ― (10 ottobre) Harold Pinter nasce al numero 19 di Thistlewaite Road a Hackney, nella zona nord di Londra. Figlio unico di genitori ebrei britannici di origine est-europea: suo padre, Hyman "Jack" Pinter (1902–1997) era un sarto per moda femminile; sua madre, Frances (nata Moskowitz; 1904–1992), una casalinga. Pinter credeva all'errata visione di una zia secondo cui la famiglia era sefardita e che era fuggita dall'Inquisizione spagnola; quindi, per le sue prime poesie, Pinter usò lo pseudonimo Pinta e in altri momenti usò varianti come da Pinto. Ricerche successive di Lady Antonia Fraser, la seconda moglie di Pinter, rivelarono che la leggenda era apocrifa; tre dei nonni di Pinter provenivano dalla Polonia e il quarto da Odessa, quindi la famiglia era aschenazita.
1939 ― Evacua a Caerhays, vicino Mevagissey, Cornwall, il primo di una serie di soggiorni fuori Londra durante la guerra.
1944 ― Ottiene un posto alla Hackney Downs Grammar School, dove è particolarmente influenzato da un eccellente insegnante di inglese, Joe Brearley.
