Inglese/Preposizioni di stato in luogo

L'inglese non prevede preposizioni articolate: at the station, in the office, on the desk.

At

È usato in riferimento ad un luogo inteso come punto di riferimento (casa, ufficio, punti specifici della strada, numeri civici…).

• At the station / airport / bus stop. At the doctor's / dentist's / barber's = Alla stazione / aeroporto / fermata del trama. Dal dottore / dentista / barbiere
• At the football match / party / meeting. At the crossroads / end of the street = Alla partita di calcio / festa / incontro. All'incrocio / fine della strada
• The title is at the top of the poster = Il titolo è nella parte superiore del poster.

Nelle seguenti espressioni non si usa l'articolo:

• At home / At work = A casa / Al lavoro
• At 10, Downing Street = Al numero 10 di Downing Street

È usato in riferimento ad un luogo inteso come area, volume, luoghi circoscritti, chiusi, anche concettualmente: stanze, locali, piazze e vie (senza riferimento al n. civico), continenti...

• In the sea / lake / river. In the kitchen / bedroom / living room = Nel mare / lago / fiume. In cucina / camera da letto / soggiorno
• In England / Boston / Beker Street / Trafalgar Square = In Inghilterra / A Boston / In Beker Street / In Trafalgar Square
• In the park / garden = Nel parco / giardino

Nelle seguenti espressioni, invece, non si usa l'articolo:

In bed / in hospital / in prison = A letto / in ospedale / in prigione

In indica anche un punto in uno spazio circoscritto.

• in the garden
• in Cardiff

On

È usato in relazione ad un luogo considerato come superficie, e per indicare il lato destro ed il lato sinistro di un oggetto.

• On the table / floor= sul tavolo / pavimento
• On the bus / plane / train= sull'autobus / aereo / treno
• On the third floor= al terzo piano
• On page 21= a pagina 21

• On the road= sulla strada
• 'On the left / right= sulla destra / sinistra

• Over= Sopra, ma senza contatto (opposto: under)

  An eagle is flying over us = Un'aquila sta volando sopra di noi

• Under = Sotto (opp.: over)

  Your book is under the table = Il tuo libro è sotto il tavolo

• Next to = Accanto, contiguo

  The school is next to the bank = La scuola è accanto alla banca

• Near = Vicino, nei pressi

  The hotel is near the city centre = L'hotel è vicino il centro

• In front of = Davanti (opposto: behind)

  There's a park in front of the cottage = C'è un parco davanti al villino

• Behind = Dietro (opposto: in front of)

  There's a tennis court behind the hotel = C'è un campo da tennis dietro l'hotel

• Opposite = Di fronte

  The car park is opposite the hotel = Il parcheggio è di fronte all'hotel

• Between = Tra, fra (due cose)

  There's a golf course between the hotel and the river = C'è un campo da golf fra l'hotel ed il fiume

• In the middle = Nel mezzo, al centro

  In the middle of the room = Al centro della stanza

• Among = Tra, fra (più cose)

  There's a nice cottage among the trees = C'è un bel villino fra gli alberi

• Outside = Fuori, all'esterno (opposto: inside)

  It was already dark outside = Fuori era già buio

• Inside = Dentro, all'interno (opposto: outside)

  The swimming pool is inside the hotel = La piscina è all'interno dell'albergo

• Below = Sotto, al di sotto (opp. above)

  Four degrees below zero = Quattro gradi sotto zero

• Above = Sopra, al di sopra (opp.: below)

  Ten degrees above zero = Dieci gradi sopra lo zero
