I verbi modali o difettivi sono verbi ausiliari, utili nella costruzione di proposizioni.
Essi seguono queste regole:
- Non possono essere utilizzati accanto ad un altro verbo modale, per cui rifiutano l'ausliare nelle forme interrogativa e negativa.
- Sono seguiti dalla forma base (infinito non preceduto dal to) del verbo che reggono.
- Alla terza persona singolare non vogliono la s finale.
Ecco i verbi modali più utilizzati:
- must = dovere(tempo presente)
- should = dovere (tempo condizionale)
- ought to = dovere (tempo condizionale)
- shall = usato con 'I' e 'We' nelle interrogative con il significato di 'Vuoi che io..' 'Vuoi che noi..'
- can = potere (tempo presente)
- could = potere (tempo condizionale)
- will = futuro (usato per tutte le persone)

- MUST (solitamente usato per esprimere obbligo)
- I must stop smoking.
- You mustn't smoke here. (must not)

- Should we book a table?
- Yes, you should.

- CAN (Usato principalmente per esprimere abilità o capacità ma anche per le richieste)
- Anyone can change the world.
- Can you help me? Sorry, we can't help you.
- Can you swim?
- Yes, I can.
- No, I can't.
- COULD (usato per esprimere possibilità o probabilità o richieste)
- Could you tell me the time, please?
- You could be right.
- She could be in the bathroom.
- WILL (futuro)
- esprime una decisione presa istantaneamente
- offrire un'idea o servizio,
- fare una promessa
- esprime una previsione per il futuro senza alcuna prova concreta
- I will do everything to help you.
- I won't lie for you. (will not)
