Armita Abbasi is an Iranian woman who gained international attention due to her arrest, alleged torture, and sexual assault by Iranian authorities during the nationwide protests in 2022. Born in 2001, Abbasi was a 20-year-old resident of Karaj, Iran, when she was arrested on October 10, 2022, amid widespread demonstrations following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody. Reports indicate that during her detention, Abbasi was subjected to repeated sexual assaults and physical abuse. Medical staff at Imam Ali Hospital in Karaj observed signs of violent sexual assault when she was brought in on October 18, 2022. However, Iranian authorities denied these allegations, attributing her condition to intestinal issues. In January 2023, Abbasi and 14 other detained protesters initiated a hunger strike in Fardis Prison to protest their prolonged detention and lack of medical care. After more than four months in detention, Abbasi was released on February 8, 2023. Her father confirmed her release, expressing relief and hope for the release of other detainees. Abbasi's case has drawn international attention to the human rights violations occurring in Iran, particularly the use of sexual violence against protesters. Her story highlights the resilience of Iranian youth in the face of systemic oppression.
